Can you spot the problem shown in the picture above?

No, it's not my oversized belly or the dirty shirt! It has to do with the garlic itself.

I don't really have much to say here other than the fact that the picture at the top of this post above the title shows that I made a mistake in harvesting my garlic.

If you know anything about harvesting garlic you'll know by looking at those that I harvested them too early.

Ideally they should have been harvested when about half of the leaves had started turning brown.

That means the garlic could have been in the ground and grown quite a bit more in size before harvest.

Actually, in my defense, this was a picture taken quite some time ago when I first started growing garlic.

Now I know better, and I harvest garlic when it looks more like the picture of garlic in the garden above. You can see that about half of those leaves are brown, so they're close to ready for harvest.

Unlike the bundle I'm holding in the picture at the top of the page.  Oh well, live, garden and learn!

Hi there, I'm Mark - the "Old Guy Gardener." I've been growing herbs and vegetables in the Maritime Northwest for over 30 years. Gardening here is different than anywhere else in the U.S. Our soil, our climate, our gardening seasons, planting times and even many of our garden pests are different. I'm here to share what I've learned about how and why "Westsiders" need to do things differently.
