It's time I introduced you to my Old Guy Gardener certified assistant/supervisor.  Gabby has been helping me in the garden ever since we brought her home as a puppy eight years ago. Mostly I think that she just supervises, although sometimes it's hard to tell because she's not very talkative!  When we say "let's go out to the garden" she makes a beeline for the front garden gate. Just like us, she loves the occasional garden snack/treat. She likes sugar snap peas, beans, tomatoes, carrots and all the brassicas.

Sometimes after a long hot day working in the garden, she'll find creative ways to cool off.

Gabby is trained to observe proper garden etiquette. She will not eat anything that is not given to her, and she does not walk on any of the planted beds.  She does a good job of patrolling inside and outside the garden to help discourage garden predators like deer, rabbits and squirrels.  I just wish we could train her to catch moles!  One of her best traits as an OGG dog is that she never criticizes or complains. Never once has she said, "why aren't the tomatoes ripe yet" or "you've got a lot of gaps in that row of onions."  If only people were that nice!

You will likely be seeing more of her in future articles and videos.  She's a faithful loyal companion and Seahawks fan!

Hi there, I'm Mark - the "Old Guy Gardener." I've been growing herbs and vegetables in the Maritime Northwest for over 30 years. Gardening here is different than anywhere else in the U.S. Our soil, our climate, our gardening seasons, planting times and even many of our garden pests are different. I'm here to share what I've learned about how and why "Westsiders" need to do things differently.
